how proud am i of my husband today? and yesterday.
and the day before, just because.
here are a few quotes i want to share in honor of the 235th marine corps birthday.
The safest place in Korea was right behind a platoon of Marines. Lord, how they could fight!
MGen. Frank E. Lowe, USA; Korea, 26 January 1952
The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!
Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, 1945
You cannot exaggerate about the Marines. They are convinced to the point of arrogance, that they are the most ferocious fighters on earth- and the amusing thing about it...is that they are.
Father Kevin Keaney, 1st Marine Division Chaplain, Korean War
And I love this story-
"Some people still don't understand why military personnel do what they do for a living. This exchange between Senators John Glenn and Senator Howard Metzenbaum is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive impromptu speech, but it's also a good example of one man's explanation of why men and women in the armed services do what they do for a living.
This is a typical, though sad, example of what some who have never served think of the military.
Senator Metzenbaum to Senator Glenn: "How can you run for Senate when you've never held a real job?"
Senator Glenn: "I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps.
I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different occasions. I was in the space program.
It wasn't my checkbook, Howard; it was my life on the line. It was not a nine-to-five job, where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to the bank. I ask you to go with me ... as I went the other day... to a veteran's hospital and look those men - with their mangled bodies - in the eye, and tell them they didn't hold a job. You go with me to the Space Program at NASA and go, as I have gone, to the widows and Orphans of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee... and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their DADS didn't hold a job.
You go with me on Memorial Day and you stand in Arlington National Cemetery, where I have more friends buried than I'd like to remember, and you watch those waving flags.
You stand there, and you think about this nation, and you tell me that those people didn't have a job? I'll tell you, Howard Metzenbaum; you should be on your knees every. day. of your. life. thanking God that there were some men who held real jobs. And they required a dedication to a purpose - and a love of country and a dedication to duty - that was more important than life itself. And their self-sacrifice is what made this country possible.
I have held a job, Howard. What about you?""
the best part about my husband being a marine? he does have the cleanest body, the cleanest shaven face and well kept hair cut. he doesn't have a dirty mind or low morals. he has the highest morale and self confidence in the marine corps than anyone i've met.
The American Marines have pride, and benefit from it. They are tough, cocky, sure of themselves and their buddies. They can fight and they know it.
General Mark Clark, U.S. Army
lizzie, hopefully this commercial is more realistic for you than the ones with the swords.
a few reasons why i am grateful my husband is a marine:
- he can make a bed like its nobody's business.
- he has excellent manners. he calls gentlemen "sir" and ladies "ma'am".
- he cleans our bathrooms....and he cleans them well.
- not just that he's a marine, but that he is a dedicated marine. he remembers the ones that have gone before him, and is respectful of the tradition and uniform. i thought his cammies were just work clothes. however, he won't ever put them on the floor. he respects them because "that is the uniform that men die for our country in."
dear jon, i hope you're reading this all the way over there.
i love you. happy 6 months.
lastly, this video. its him, a couple hours before he left, pretending to be extremely nervous. at the end, he acts like he hates being this sick. he loves it though.
